Hey everyone!! My first post of 2017, and yet I’m still going to talk about a show that ended in 2016. Well that’s life for you. Today, we are going to be talking about episode 10 of Yuri on Ice!!, also known as “Gotta Supercharge it! Pre-Grand Prix Final Special!”. As always, there may be some spoilers, so I highly suggest you go watch the episode if you have not already. With that out of the way, let’s get started!
This episode is about the different characters as they prepare, and relax, before the Grand Prix Final. For Yuri and Victor this includes, going shopping, sightseeing, losing a bag of nuts(sorry just too funny not too add), giving each other “good luck”(*cough* engagement *cough*) rings, and hanging out with the other competitors for dinner. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that, during the previous GPF banquet, Yuri, in a drunken state, had invited Victor to come to his home and become his coach. During this episode, we were also introduced to Otabek, the skater from Kazakhstan, who becomes Yurio’s friend, and JJ’s girlfriend, whose not that important of a character, but it’s nice to actually see her actually being with JJ.
Well, I know that was a short summary, but it is basically what that episode is. Does that mean this episode was bad? Heck, no! In my own opinion, this is the best episode of the series. What this episode does is something that we haven’t seen in the last few episodes: the characters relaxing and interacting with each other outside of competition. Since about episode 4(or the episode with Minami in it), we have mostly just been going from one ice skating competition to another, without much of a break. Not that the ice skating is boring, far from it to be honest, but this change in scenery and tension was just so refreshing. We have got so used to seeing these characters being serious about the competition, so seeing them when they have down time is so nice.
Speaking of which, this is also another area that shows how much thought and effort was put into this episode. We don’t just watch Yuri and Victor hanging around Barcelona. We get to see Chris and Victor at the pool, we see Otabek and Yurio becoming friends, we get to see most of the skaters eating dinner and talking about the past GPF. I feel that if this was any other show, we would only be seeing the main characters just traveling around the city and maybe bumping into the others along the way. Not to mention, alot of this episode is narrated from Victor’s perspective, which is a nice change since we have only ever heard from Yuri’s perspective.
Lastly, let’s talk about the scene pretty much everyone knows about: the ring exchange scene. I feel that for anyone who doubted the legitimacy of Victor and Yuri’s love up to this point, was quickly dashed away, as this scene shows not only the purity these characters have, but shows their true feelings for each other, without having to actually say “I love you”. And here’s the thing: that is what Yuri on Ice is about. What I mean is that the show wants to prove that love can be shared between two people, without them having to say they love them. It is through the actions, not words, of the characters, whether it be a kiss, training, exchanging rings or loving gazes, that proves how much these characters unconditionally love each other.
This episode is definitely a favorite of mine, not just for this series, but for the entire year. It made me experience so many different feelings, that it is honestly hard to explain. So if my review of this episode has not already convinced you to watch this series, then I don’t know what else will. This series is available on Crunchyroll.com. With that said, what did you guys think of this episode? Does it deserve all the praise I have given it? Are Yuri and Victor the best couple? Please comment on these questions and any other thoughts you have below. Thank you again for reading, celebrate pure love, and I hope to see you guys next time!
Also, on a side note, drunk Yuri knows how to get a party started!
